Shrouded in smoke

In the midst of a haze, here are tips for protection

A friend recently provided real-time updates on social media about a bush fire in Rimba.

Their posts vividly captured the unfolding scene, starting from a small plume of smoke and progressing to falling ash. The once-clear backdrop gradually transformed into a growing haze.

On the same day, the Lumut Bypass Highway was closed due to localised haze persisting in several areas of the Belait District.

A viral video showed the location from a commuter’s perspective, with a vehicle in front quickly disappearing into a wall of smoke, reminiscent of a scene from a horror movie.

Similarly, the Brunei Darussalam Meteorological Department issued an advisory through their Telegram channel, Brunei Weather, regarding Excessive Hot Weather (EHW) at several locations across the Sultanate.

EHW occurs when the daily maximum temperature reaches at least 35 degrees Celsius for three consecutive days.

The latest pollutant standard index (PSI) at 3.45pm yesterday, as reported by the Brunei WX mobile application based on data from the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation (JASTRe), showed Brunei-Muara and Belait districts recording PSI readings of 75 and 70, respectively.

The day before, only Belait District was in the moderate level with a reading of 59.

Meanwhile, Tutong and the Temburong districts showed a good level of PSI with 49 and 36, respectively.

Given these readings, the Ministry of Health advised the public that moderate PSI readings (between 50 and 100) can cause minor health effects such as coughs, eye irritations, and runny noses.

In light of the haze, it is crucial to take precautions to protect your health. Here are some tips and tricks to stay safe during hazy conditions:

Reduce outdoor activities

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends reducing outdoor activities during hazy conditions, especially for sensitive groups such as children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory conditions.

Prolonged exposure to haze can lead to respiratory symptoms and exacerbate existing health conditions. Staying indoors can significantly reduce exposure to harmful pollutants present in the haze.

Wear masks

When venturing outdoors during hazy conditions, wearing masks can help reduce the inhalation of harmful pollutants.

Opt for masks rated N95 or higher, which are designed to filter out fine particles in the air. Ensure the mask fits snugly over your nose and mouth for maximum effectiveness.

Practise good hygiene

Washing your hands and face when coming indoors from outside can help remove pollutants that may have settled on your skin.

This can prevent these pollutants from being ingested or entering your body through your eyes, nose, or mouth. Using a mild soap and clean water is effective in removing particles from the skin.

Stay hydrated

Drinking plenty of water is essential during hazy conditions to stay hydrated.

Haze can cause irritation to the respiratory tract, leading to increased fluid loss through breathing. Adequate hydration helps maintain the body’s natural defences and supports overall health.

The recommended daily fluid intake varies depending on factors such as age, gender and level of physical activity.

Use non-preservative eye drops

Irritated eyes are a common symptom of exposure to haze. Using non-preservative eye drops can help relieve discomfort and reduce redness and inflammation.

Look for eye drops that are specifically formulated for dry or irritated eyes and do not contain preservatives, as preservatives can further irritate sensitive eyes.

Moisturise dry skin

Prolonged exposure to haze can dry out the skin, leading to irritation and discomfort. Using a lotion or moisturising cream can help hydrate the skin and restore moisture barrier function.

Look for products that contain ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or ceramides, which help attract and retain moisture in the skin.

With the haze situation in the Sultanate essential to prioritise health and well-being, especially during such environmental challenges. These simple yet effective measures can go a long way in protecting oneself and loved ones during hazy conditions. – Wardi Wasil
